Our Fimmmmmlm Noir vs. Neo-Noir film festival portrayed two versions of film noir with films from China, France, Turkey and Africa. The screenings were held at the Opa-Locka Arts and Recreation Center (ARC). The films were projected against a white wall within a beautiful art gallery, which gave a wonderful picture quality for our audience.

The films we curated consisted of the following:

  • The Goddess (1934)

  • Three Monkeys (2008)

  • Bob Le Flambeur (1956)

  • How To Steal 2 Million (2011)

The organization simultaneously held a local barbecue down the street for the community. Our audience was flowing inside and out, between both events, but really took a genuine interest in the films. We first screened the movies then gave a brief explanation on their significance, then opened the floor for brief questions.

Our audience consisted of FIU students, Opa-Locka community members and some film connoisseurs. One FIU cinema professor heard about our event and allowed his class to receive extra credit for attending, one student said. Also a gentleman named Jose Jacho, VP of operations for a film society in South Beach stopped by to specifically view our Turkish film.

Although the feedback we received was very positive all around, our team determined that if we were to do it again, judging by the audience’s reaction, we would introduce more South African films to the Opa-Locka community. However, our team considered the evening a great success for all involved.
